Our Values

We believe great science thrives in an environment where people feel supported, respected, and empowered. We are therefore committed to ensuring our lab is a welcoming space where everyone has the support they need to succeed. We value diverse perspectives and expect everyone to contribute to a culture of curiosity, collaboration, and integrity. We are always looking for new lab members that are open to learning from each other, giving and receiving feedback, and working together to push science forward.

Current Lab Members

Julia Kreiner
kreiner@uchicago.edu
Principal Investigator
she/her

Julia did her PhD at University of Toronto and her postdoctoral fellowship at the University of British Columbia. She likes to get outdoors, moving sometimes slowly (jogging, hiking) and sometimes more quickly (skiing, biking), travelling to new places, and enjoying exquisite foods. Check out the research page to learn about research interests.

Rozenn Pineau
rozennpineau@uchicago.edu
Postdoctoral Fellow

Rozenn earned her PhD from the Georgia Institute of Technology, where she studied the emergence and maintenance of diversity in snowflake yeast and aspen evolutionary genetics. She continues to pursue her interest in plant adaptation and genomics in the Kreiner lab, focusing on the genetic architecture of plant adaptation to drought. Rozenn enjoys being in nature, photographing details, climbing, hiking, and painting.

Jake Montgomery
jsmontgomery@uchicago.edu
Postdoctoral Fellow

Jake earned his Master’s and PhD from University of Illinois and Colorado State University, respectively. Throughout graduate school, his research focused on understanding the genetic and evolutionary basis of adaptation in weeds of agricultural areas. He also enjoys watching and playing various sports, finding new things in the city of Chicago, and spending time with his wife and pets.

Libby Polston
espolston@uchicago.edu
PhD Student in Ecology & Evolution

Libby did her undergrad at University of California Davis, and worked as a lab manager in the Begun lab. She is interested in using computational analysis to understand the mechanisms of local adaptation and the maintenance of genetic diversity. She enjoys biking, climbing, hiking and arts and crafts.

Will Yaeger
wyaeger@uchicago.edu
Graduate Student

Will completed his undergraduate studies at Lehigh University before conducting research on microbial biocontrol of cacao pathogens in Perú. He is interested in understanding the genetics of rapid adaptation, particularly in the context of anthropogenic ecological change and its effects on population connectivity and species interactions. Outside of science, he enjoys reading, running, and exploring the natural world.

Julian Huang
Quad Faculty Undergrad Research Assistant

Julian is a first year computational science undergraduate student passionate about geospatial analyses, global trends in land-use, and machine learning. He is putting his coding chops to use to help us implement machine learning models to predict allele frequnecy change under changing land-use.
